With a population of 12 million people, the population of North Sumatra is divided into five major ethnic groups and languages, namely coastal Malay people living along the Malacca Strait, Batak, Angkola or Mandailing from southern Tapanuli and Nias Islands off the west coast. Several other ethnic groups also live in Medan and other cities in North Sumatra, the largest of which are ethnic Chinese and Indians.
